MEN: THE WEAKER SEX
Well, that's according to
Dr. Legato's article in the NYT.
One choice quote:
"...from the moment of conception on, men are less likely to survive than women."
Read on and lets discuss. I'm feeling particularly feisty tonight!

The problem we have in America - when a "group" feels slighted in some way, we tend to over compensate to atone for the lack once it's brought to our attention.
It's been a well known fact that men die younger - on the whole - than women. Is it any wonder that doctors would concentrate early on, looking for treatments for men? No - not a wonder at all. Then women started complaining that they were being ignored.
Now we over compensate the other way - pulling out all the stops to study women's issues. In the meantime, men and their issues are ignored. After all they've had all that attention for so long... why would they need more.
Once again the pendulum is swinging. In the last 30 years or so, while men's health issues have been on the back burner - there have been huge research strides, we have computers available, we have so much technology.
If we were a balanced society (which we aren't) - there should be equal funding of men's and women's health research. As far as I'm concerned each sex is as important to the survival of the species as the other. And in the end - it's all about human survival. Anyone who thinks we will survive as a species with only one sex - because the labs can create new babies - is deluding themselves.
Life is never fair - everyone has their own issues to cope with. But we can make research spending more equitable than it currently is... then again research spending is politics. So, it will never be equal.

Well you know, we really only need a couple men to keep our society going. They would be referenced as the "donors" cause really, women do all the hard work after the men make their "donation" ;P

The sad part is that the pendulum will continue swinging endlessly into the future. I really don't see a balanced view in terms of medical research. In that industry it's about who's the most diseased popular celebrity that will use their fame to fund research. If it's government dollars it's about which interest group will shout the loudest and it's they who will get the most money.
Money for medical research is divided by popularity, party lines and revenue!
